has succeeded in drilling down through over two miles of ice to reach lake Vostok - a large lake under the Antarctic Ice.
Scientists can now begin a search for new life forms. If
life is found in the lake's icy darkness, it may provide the best
answer yet to whether life can exist in the extreme conditions on Mars or Jupiter's moon Europa.
Although this is very exciting scientifically there has been concern about possible contamination of samples and pollution of the lake from the anti-freeze and other chemicals used to keep the bore hole open and the drilling machinery working.
